Glass for the Island's Biggest City
Holmes Beach is the largest of the three cities on Anna Maria Island, and most impact windows work here goes into homes that see water on more than one side. The city takes in the middle of the island, including Key Royale, a bayside island linked by a bridge since 1960. The State Road 64 bridge from Bradenton lands in Holmes Beach, so this is also where most traffic and deliveries reach the island.
Sliders on the canal
Many Holmes Beach homes, especially on Key Royale, face a canal or the bay through wide sliding glass doors. Impact sliding glass doors are often the single best upgrade. A strong slider:
- Uses laminated glass in every panel
- Has a frame and interlock built to the design pressure on its product approval
- Sits on a sill that sheds water driven against it
- Locks at more than one point
On raised homes, the slider often opens to a deck rather than a patio, and wind pressure on that elevated opening is higher.
Helene's flooding
Hurricane Helene stayed nearly 100 miles offshore in September 2024, but every single-family home on the island reportedly saw at least 3 to 4 feet of floodwater. Impact doors and windows are not flood barriers. Where a lower level took water, we inspect the frames and walls first, then talk about what goes back in.
Rentals and occupancy
The 2020 census counted 4,196 housing units in Holmes Beach, and 61.1% of them were vacant on census day. The rental vacancy rate was 73.3%. In other words, many homes here are rentals or second homes. Glass that needs no prep is the default choice for absentee owners.
A planned postwar town
Holmes Beach was started after World War II as a planned community and named for John E. Holmes Sr., and it was incorporated on March 13, 1950. Many original postwar houses are small block homes with modest windows. Replacing them often means custom sizes, since standard sizes have changed over the decades.
Hardware that survives salt air
On an island, salt finds every piece of exposed metal. Ask about stainless or coated fasteners, frame finishes rated for coastal use, and locks and rollers built for the shore. Rinse frames and tracks with fresh water a few times a year and after storms. A little care keeps sliders rolling smoothly and locks turning for the long term.
Paperwork
Holmes Beach is its own city in Manatee County. Check with the city's building department on its permit process; we provide the product approval numbers for every window and door either way. Call (941) 390-3550 to set up a visit.

Holmes Beach Questions
My slider opens onto a raised deck. Does that change anything?
Yes. Higher openings can face more wind pressure, so the slider's product approval has to meet the design pressure for that height and location.
Should I replace windows on a lower level that flooded?
First have the walls and frames checked for damage. If the opening is sound or repaired, impact units can go back in.
Are your sliders custom-sized for older homes?
Many manufacturers make custom sizes. We measure each opening and note any longer lead times in the estimate.
