The Largest Opening in the House
Impact sliding glass doors are often the biggest single piece of storm protection a Sarasota home needs. A slider onto the pool deck can be 12 feet wide or more, and as the largest piece of glass it catches the most wind load. It is also the opening people least want to shutter, because it is how the family gets outside every day.
Configurations
- Two-panel: one fixed and one operating panel, the standard size in many older ranch and block homes
- Three- and four-panel: wider openings, often with two operating panels that meet in the middle
- Pocket sliders: panels disappear into a pocket in the wall for a fully open corner to the lanai, which usually takes wall work
- Corner or 90-degree units: two runs meeting with no post, where the approval and wall framing allow it
Frames come in aluminum for slim profiles and large panels, or vinyl in smaller sizes. Panel height matters as much as width, since taller panels take more load.
Water as well as wind
Sliding doors leak more often than windows because the sill has to let the panels roll. Approved doors are tested for water resistance as well as structural load, and the higher the water rating, the more wind-driven rain the sill holds back. Openings facing the Gulf or a wide bay take driving rain straight on, so we look at the water rating on those units, not only the design pressure. Proper sill pans and sealing at installation matter just as much.
Fitting the door to the opening
Replacing a slider often turns up something under the old frame: a rotted wood buck, a cracked slab edge at the sill, or a step-down that does not leave room for a taller impact sill. We check those at the estimate so the quote reflects the real work. Where you want a wider opening than the current one, the header above has to carry the new span, and that becomes a structural question with its own permit drawings.
Everyday use
Impact panels are heavier than ordinary glass, so rollers, track and handles do more work. Quality rollers on a clean track make a big panel glide; sand on the track makes it drag and wears the rollers. Keeping the track vacuumed and rinsed is the most useful maintenance you can do, especially on the keys. Many owners add a multipoint lock or a foot bolt for security, and screen panels can be added to most systems.
Energy and comfort
A big west-facing slider can heat a room fast in the afternoon. Low-E coatings and insulated laminated glass cut that solar heat and reduce glare on the pool, which helps air conditioning keep up during the long summer.
Permits and insurance
Sliding door replacement is permitted like any other opening, with the product approval reviewed and the installation inspected. Once complete, the door counts toward the opening protection on your wind mitigation form.

Typical Impact Sliding Door Costs
| Job | Typical range |

| Four-panel sliding door (national) | $2,500 to $7,000 |
| Installation labor (national, per job) | $300 to $800 |
National ranges from Angi's sliding glass door cost guide; multi-panel rows are for standard doors and impact versions cost more. Ranges vary with width, height, panel count, frame, glass and sill repairs. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Sliding Door Replacement Works
1. Inspect the opening
We measure, check the sill, slab edge and header, and note exposure to wind-driven rain.
2. Specify and order
Panel layout, frame, glass and water rating are set in the quote, then the door is built to size.
3. Remove and prepare
The old door comes out, the buck and sill are repaired as approved, and a sill pan is set.
4. Install and adjust
The new frame is anchored to the approval, panels hung and adjusted, and the opening sealed and inspected.

Impact Sliding Glass Doors Questions
Are impact sliding doors worth it over shutters?
For a door you use daily, usually yes. Shuttering a large slider before every storm is heavy work, and closed shutters block the main way out to the yard. Impact glass keeps the opening usable and protected at the same time.
Why does my sliding door leak during storms?
Common causes are worn weatherstripping, clogged weep holes in the sill, a sill without a pan underneath, or a door with a low water rating for its exposure. A replacement should address all four.
Can you make my sliding door opening wider?
Often, but widening changes the load on the header above, so it needs structural review and drawings for the permit. We will tell you at the estimate whether it looks feasible.
How heavy are impact sliding door panels?
Noticeably heavier than standard glass because of the laminated layers. Good rollers and a clean track keep them easy to move; we adjust them at installation.
